Lets start celebration with Nasi Tumpeng Set
Birthdays are always a great reason to celebrate, and today we had an extra special one with a fantastic Indonesian feast to mark 初七. This was my first time trying Nasi Tumpeng, and I’m so glad I did, thanks to the wonderful recommendation from Peg! If you’re looking for a dish that’s not only flavorful but also a feast for the eyes, Nasi Tumpeng should be on your list.
For this celebration, we got to enjoy a spread of bold, aromatic dishes from Dapoer Peg, showcasing the beauty of Indonesian cuisine. Here’s a closer look at the star of the show:

The Star of the Show: Nasi Tumpeng
Nasi Tumpeng is a traditional Indonesian dish that symbolizes gratitude and celebration. It features turmeric-infused rice, which is aromatic and rich in coconut milk, served with a variety of flavorful side dishes that complement each other perfectly. Here’s what we enjoyed: ✨ Nasi Kuning
The Nasi Kuning was a fragrant base made with turmeric and coconut milk, giving it a beautiful golden color and rich flavor. The slight sweetness of the coconut milk paired wonderfully with the aromatic turmeric, creating a truly comforting foundation for the rest of the meal.
✨ Opor Ayam
This dish featured tender chicken simmered in creamy coconut gravy. The chicken was so juicy, and the coconut gravy was rich and flavorful without being too heavy. It was a comforting and satisfying addition to the spread!
✨ Sambal Goreng Prawn
For those who love a little spice, the Sambal Goreng Prawn was a perfect dish! The juicy prawns were tossed in a spicy sambal, giving them an umami-packed flavor that wasn’t too overpowering. The perfect balance of heat and sweetness made this dish a real highlight.
✨ Terong Balado
Terong Balado (spicy eggplant) was another standout dish. The eggplant was perfectly soft and coated in a fiery chili sambal, adding a lovely level of spice that was not too intense but still gave the dish a nice kick. If you’re a fan of eggplant, this dish is a must-try!
✨ Omelette
The Omelette was light and fluffy, offering a soft and comforting texture. Paired with sambal, it made for a great balance to some of the spicier dishes on the table.
✨ Bergedil
The Bergedil—fried golden potato cutlets—were absolutely delightful. With a creamy, savory center, these little potato bites had the perfect balance of crunch and softness, making them a wonderful snack in between the other dishes.
✨ Tempeh Kering
A crunchy and savory treat, the Tempeh Kering came with a sweet and salty mix of ikan bilis (dried anchovies) and peanuts. It added a delightful crunch to the meal, and the balance of flavors made it a dish that you couldn’t stop nibbling on!
✨ Sambal Belacan
For those who crave heat, the Sambal Belacan is a must. This fiery sambal was packed with ultimate chili kick, making it the perfect complement to all the other dishes. It definitely brought a fiery, spicy finish to the meal.

A Well-Balanced Feast
I loved not only the vibrant presentation of each dish but also how well all the flavors were balanced. From the rich, creamy coconut gravy to the fiery sambals, every dish had its own unique flavor, yet they all worked harmoniously together. The Nasi Tumpeng was definitely a celebration of bold Indonesian flavors, and I can see why it’s often served at special occasions like birthdays and festive gatherings.
A big thanks to Peg for the great recommendation—it was my first time trying Nasi Tumpeng, and I couldn’t have asked for a better introduction. The meal was a fantastic experience that brought warmth, spice, and joy to our celebration.
